Small Changes Create BIG
Results!
Eat more veggies,
exercise more, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, don’t
get stressed out, watch those carbs, eat smaller portions, and
whatever you do, don’t eat sweets! All those tips for
living a healthy life are enough to overwhelm even the most
self-disciplined person. It’s best to incorporate
small changes into your life so you don’t rebel like a two
year old who won’t eat anything green. First, articulate
your intention, let’s say to drop one size. Then pick just two
or three things to change and stick with those until they
become second nature and then add something else. For
example, maybe you decide to eat dinner off a smaller plate
and do 10 minutes of walking every morning. Your body
won’t change overnight, but it will change permanently if you
continue to add small behavior changes over
time. In addition, the most successful people are
gentle with themselves throughout the process of becoming
truly healthy. They don’t beat themselves up for one
slip-up but instead are grateful for getting back on track.
They don’t compare their progress with someone else’s, but
instead do the best they can. Finally, they don’t despise
themselves for what their body looks like, but instead love
themselves for who they are. Remember, small
changes create BIG results! -Pat
Altvater, www.outsmartweight.com
Why You Shouldn’t Skip
Meals
Skipping meals makes
you more likely to make up for those missing calories by
snacking or eating more at your next meal. Research
indicates that people who skip breakfast tend to be heavier
than those who eat a proper breakfast. The best
approach to meals is to eat 4-5 smaller meals rather than 2 or
3 big ones. Why? It helps stave off hunger and it
trains you to eat less per sitting. -Shirley St.
Julian,
St. Julian

Beat Your Sweet
Tooth
Sugar cravings occur
when the body’s pH levels become too acidic. Snacking on
veggies restores pH balance, creating an unfriendly
environment for the yeast cells that thrive on sugar and
activate junk food cravings. So when your sweet tooth
acts up, dip into some chunky salsa for a tasty treat that
won’t hurt your waistline. -Shirley St.

Healthy Smile = Happy
Smile
We work hard at keeping
our bodies disease-free. As it is important for our entire
body, it is just as important for our mouths. Having an
attractive, healthy and clean mouth gives us more confidence
and enables us to greet people with big smiles. Total care
begins with regular professional visits, including exams and
cleanings, and daily home oral hygiene. For a
beautiful smile, be sure that you:
- Have
regular dental check ups; usually every 6 months
- Brush
your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day.
- Be
sure your dentist does a thorough exam including oral cancer
screening.
- If
you have any concerns about the way your teeth are feeling,
be sure to have your dentist check it out right
away.
When
you smile, you are happy and people will love to meet you. So
don't hold back your beautiful smile! -Suzie

Question of the Month: What
fun or thrilling form of exercise keeps you
moving?
It's Zumba! What a
blast! As soon as the music starts, your face starts to smile,
your body responds and you end up laughing while getting an
incredible workout! -Joy MacLeod, C. Ht.,
Hypnotherapy Associates of N.W.
Ohio The best way to keep fit is to
own a dog. It requires lots of love, lots of exercise,
constant responsibility and it keeps you moving – it’s a
built-in fitness program! -Jan Gibson, Jandane
Kennels Feeding the cows is a great
form of exercise for me! Those feed and water buckets
are 20-50 pounds each, not to mention lifting them over the
chest-high fence to hit the trough. Get weight lifting
and cardio work! -Kathy Hassan, AVP, Citizens
National Bank A few of the things I
do to stay in shape include Boot Camp training, water aerobics
and weight training. Although the boot camp is not for
everyone, the water aerobics can be. I have found the
water very beneficial. It’s not hard on your joints and you
feel like you’re not even exercising. The best part
about it is the friendships you develop with others with the
same goals of staying fit. Then there’s the occasional
margarita’s with the swimmers afterwards. Can’t beat
it! -Annette Young, Bay
